Kirby Smart to be named DC today?

January 11, 2010

Well, when I posted about Todd Grantham on Friday, and jokingly said “now watch it be Kirby Smart on Monday,” the news of UGA’s offer to Kirby hadn’t yet come out. Now it has, and we may very well get an announcement today. So I guess you can call me psychic.

What we think we know is that UGA has made a formal offer to Kirby Smart, and dawg sports reports that the offer is somewhere in the neighborhood of a 3-4 year contract with a ~$700k salary. If true, it would make Smart one of the highest paid assistants in college football, rivaled only by Will Muschamp of Texas and Monte Kiffin of Tennessee, to my knowledge.

This offer was likely submitted on Friday, so Kirby has had the weekend to think it over. I do not think that Alabama will match the offer (and according to David Hale via twitter, he is hearing the same thing). If Bama reacts to the offer the same way that the Bama fans are, they will let Kirby go and rely on the defensive-minded Saban to find another assistant to run “his defense.”

No use re-hashing the reasons why Kirby would accept our offer at this point. All we can do now is wait. I expect we will hear something today. But here’s something to ponder – Alabama AD Mal Moore says that Nick Saban handles the hiring of his staff… will the egotistical Saban come to Moore and ask for the money to keep Smart on? Or will he let him go without even a counter-offer? Saban’s post-Rose Bowl game comments didn’t indicate that he would be very happy about any of his assistants seeking lateral moves. Jeff Schultz seems to believe that the only way Alabama doesn’t keep Smart is if Saban “doesn’t want to.” Of course, considering the author, that opinion isn’t particularly surprising.

Like I said… the speculation and opining doesn’t matter anymore. The offer is on the table. For all we know, the ink may already be dry.

(FWIW, Rivals is reporting that Kirby has accepted Georgia’s offer. But I’ll pop open the bubbly when I see him take the podium)

Well, from all the stuff I’ve been reading…Kirby’s staying in AL. This did come from Nick Saban…if this is the case then it kind of stings, but there’s nothing that can be done other than move on to the next candidate. The only thing that bothers me is that the word is that Kirby had agreed in principle to join the Bulldog Nation once again! Now, if he did indeed change his mind then why have we not heard anything from him? What’s the problem here? This whole thing is rather nerve racking! I have felt confidence in Coach Richt the whole time, but rejection is never easy to deal with…and this is the first actual rejection if this is the case. Regardless there are more qualified candidates and I’m sure we will have a DC and D staff in due time…GO DAWGS!
