My wounds have healed, I’ve sobered up and I’m ready for more

September 8, 2009

Look, all of you in Bulldog nation have had plenty enough time to wallow in self-pity. We lost our opener. Boo-friggin-hoo. We opened up on the road for the first time in a half a century, against a top 10 team that well deserves to be in that top 10, and we didn’t lose badly. If you watched the game you know, sure our offense struggled, but we were very close to making a couple big plays that could have changed the game, and you also know that a bogus personal foul call could also very well have changed the momentum in the game. We didn’t suck. We just lost to a tough opponent on the road.

Ok? Now, get over it. None of us had illusions about going undefeated, so let’s not act like our dreams have just been shattered. The Dawgs won’t panic, neither should you. We open up Saturday at home for the conference opener (you know, the only slate that really matters) with South Carolina. And those of you predicting the Cocks to win clearly weren’t paying attention to anything this past weekend. Our offense struggled, but USC’s was non-existent. If not for a NC State fumble on their own 15, the gamecocks would not have scored a single point and would have lost 3-0. Yeah, give their defense credit, but also note the incompetence of the NC State offense.

I think it’s pretty obvious that UGA’s offense has the potential to be a lot better than that of NC State’s.  And I think it’s undeniable that the Gamecocks do not possess anywhere near the offensive threat of Oklahoma State.

Here’s what I’m sayin’ to ya: The loss at OK State changes nothing. Countless other teams struggled on the offensive side of the ball in week 1, and we were no different. What’s important is that our defense was strong, and that’s what we are counting on this year. The offense will get it right soon enough. At home, this Saturday, at night, between the hedges, we’re going to kick off our SEC schedule the right way. With a win over the ol’ ball coach.

Now you real fans who are done lamenting over how we could go 7-5 can get with the program and get ready to support the Dawgs on Saturday. And take pleasure in knowing that when we are celebrating downtown following the win Saturday night, you are in the company of the real fans, free of the bandwagon fairweathers who have moved on to the NFL for the year. Go Dawgs.
