Rejection sucks

January 11, 2010

You ever get such a big crush on a girl that you bide your time and plan your move so carefully that you just KNOW you’re going to get her? And then have her reject you? Well, imagine that happening, but the rejection comes in the middle of a large room where everyone you know is there, including a couple of arrogant a-holes who take joy in making everyone else’s life miserable.

Well, that’s probably how every Georgia fan feels today. After all the talk and conjecture and “sources” reporting something to the contrary (thanks, Rivals), in the end, Kirby Smart turned down Richt’s super-sweet offer to stay with Saban at Alabama. And it’s not just that getting turned down by a UGA alumni and ex-player hurts, it’s that everyone was watching. The Southeastern sports media was on pins and needles over the weekend waiting to see what Kirby did. Many expected him to go home. Heck, Alabama fans had pretty much said their goodbyes. And now Georgia fans must brace themselves for the oncoming barrage of smack talk from rival fans and negativity from Atlanta journalists who are grinning from ear to ear right now.

But despair not, Georgia fan. Just like that girl that rejected you wasn’t the last woman in the world, Kirby Smart is not the last great defensive coordinator in the country. I don’t mean to sound like the ever-optimistic Georgia pom-pom shaker, but I don’t think the sky is falling just yet. We took a hit on the chin, no doubt. Kirby was clearly our #1 choice, and we didn’t get him. The guy who do eventually get will not excite you like Kirby Smart probably would have. But that doesn’t mean he won’t do a great job.

Personally I believe Todd Grantham will be offered the job next, and if you read my post about him on Friday, you know why I think he would be a great hire. And if you watched the Dallas-Philadelphia game this weekend, he gave you something to think about.

Might be a good thing. If he doesn’t have enough confidence in his abilities to prove himself away from Little Nicky ,then we don’t need him.

Great post & I agree. We’ll never really know how good Smart was as a D.C. since most believe this is Nick Saban’s D.

And winning cures all ills. No matter who is coordinating the D this Fall, if we win 10+ games and get back into the national conversation, this will all be a distant memory.

I personally think we should be pursuing Air Force Defensive Coordinator, Tim DeRuyter.
